Granular Flows

چکیده
Those who have played with sand on the beach or with sugar in their kitchen are aware that a collection of solid grains can behave macroscopically like a liquid and flow. However, the description of this peculiar fluid still represents a challenge due to the lack of constitutive laws able to describe the rich phenomenology observed. In this paper we first review the properties of dry granular flows and we present recent advances in our understanding of their rheological behavior. The success and limits of a simple visco-plastic model recently developed is presented. In a second part of the paper, we go beyond the simple and ideal situation where the material is made of grains having the same size and interacting by contact interactions only. We present studies on more complex and realistic granular medium like polydispersed media, like cohesive granular media and like granular pastes made of grains immersed in a liquid. We analyse to which extend the progress made in our description of monodispersed dry granular flows can help understanding these more complex granular media.

A Lattice - Based Cellular Automata Modeling Approach for Granular Flow Lubrication
Liquid lubricants break down at extreme temperatures and promote stiction in micro-/ nanoscale environments. Consequently, using flows of solid granular particles as a “dry” lubrication mechanism in sliding contacts was proposed because of their ability to carry loads and accommodate surface velocities. Granular flows are highly complex flows that in many ways act similar to fluids, yet are dif...
متن کاملNumerical Simulation of Granular Column Collapses with Pressure-Dependent Viscoplastic Model using the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamic Method
This paper presents a numerical analysis of granular column collapse phenomenon using a two-dimensional smoothed particle hydrodynamics model and a local constitutive law proposed by Jop et al. This constitutive law, which is based on the viscoplastic behaviour of dense granular material flows, is characterized by an apparent viscosity depending both on the local strain rate and the local press...
متن کاملA new constitutive law for dense granular flows
In many geophysical or industrial applications involving flows of grains, a continuum description would be of considerable help, for example in predicting natural hazards or in designing industrial processes. However, constitutive equations for dry granular flows are still matter of debates 1-10. One difficulty is that grains can behave like a solid (in a sand pile), a liquid (when poured from ...
متن کاملNumerical Analysis of Granular Flows in a Silo Bed on Flow Regime Characterization
The flow characteristics of a gravity-driven dense granular flow in a granular bed with a contracted drainage orifice are studied by using discrete element method and quantitative analysis. Three values of discharging rates, ranging from fast to slow dense flows, are investigated. Time variations and derivatives of mean forces and velocities, as well as their respective correlations, are analyz...
متن کاملAnalytical solution of the μ(I)−rheology for fully developed granular flows in simple configurations
Using the μ(I) continuum model recently proposed for dense granular flows, we study theoretically steady and fully granular flows in two configurations: a plane shear cell and a channel made of two parallel plates (Poiseuille configuration). In such a description, the granular medium behaves like a fluid whose viscosity is a function of the inertia. In the shear plane geometry our calculation p...
متن کاملCollapse of granular-liquid mixtures over rigid, inclined beds.
This work deals with the propagation of granular-liquid waves over rigid beds, originated by the sudden removal of a sluice gate in a rectangular, inclined flume. In particular, we experimentally investigate the role of the initial volume ratio of granular material-monodispersed plastic cylinders-to water, the flume width, and the bed roughness on the time evolution of the granular front. Due t...
